Before you go
- If youโre not a citizen of an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. You may be asked to register fingerprints and a photo under the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). It is free.
- Driving on Romaniaโs national roads needs a rovinieta, which exists only as an electronic record in the database of CNAIR, the national road administration. CNAIRโs rovinieta portal (in Romanian) lists its payment options, including approved web platforms, apps and authorised distributors.

Travel tips
- Check the 24-hour forecast, use marked trails and avoid hiking alone. Salvamont recommends a group of at least three and pepper spray; for mountain rescue call 112 or 0725 826 668.
- Order a taxi through Uber or Bolt instead of hailing one. GOV.UK says drivers sometimes overcharge foreign visitors and the apps are generally reliable.
- Drive slowly on rural roads. GOV.UK lists potholes, horse-drawn carts, livestock and stray dogs, and says to use winter tyres (or snow chains for certain vehicles) whenever snow, ice or sleet is on the road.
- Carry a copy of your passport and use a hotel safe for valuables where possible. GOV.UK warns of petty theft in large towns, especially Bucharest.
