Travel tips

  1. Check the flag before you swim. The Malta Tourism Authority lists green as calm water, yellow as medium hazard, red as high hazard, purple as pests such as stinging jellyfish and double red as water closed. GOV.UK says to avoid diving into unknown water.
  2. Plan sightseeing around the midday sun. Maltaโ€™s Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate advises avoiding direct sunlight and strenuous activity between about 11:00 and 16:00, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat or cap and sunglasses.
  3. Pay for buses when you board, with cash, a contactless card or a smartphone. Malta Public Transport says a ticket from the driver is valid for two hours, with free transfers.
  4. Look out for hunters when you walk in the countryside. GOV.UK says hunting areas are rarely marked and can overlap with country walkways.
