Travel review sites: where to check before booking

A high rating is a starting point, not a guarantee. Use a site that matches what you are booking, then check who wrote the reviews and what they actually experienced.

Policies checked . No paid placements or affiliate links on this page.

Choose your starting point

  • Booking a hotel? Start with Booking.com for booking-linked feedback, then cross-check the property on Tripadvisor.
  • Booking a tour? Read the exact activity's reviews on Viator or GetYourGuide, then check the named operator separately.
  • Unsure whether to trust the stars? Use the five checks below before paying.

These are starting points, not a ranking of which platform is safest.

Compare four travel review sites

Booking-linked reviews establish a connection to a purchase; they do not make every opinion accurate. Broader review sites can add context, but a first-hand-review policy is not proof of a verified booking.

Tripadvisor

Cross-check a hotel, restaurant or tour operator

Its guidelines require a first-hand experience as a guest or potential guest. That can include a visit, booking or service interaction; it is not the same as a verified purchase through Tripadvisor.

Watch for: Check the exact business and location. An operator's overall reputation does not tell you whether one particular tour, room or departure suits you.

Booking.com

Read feedback tied to an accommodation booking

Its guest guidelines allow reviews after booking through Booking.com and staying, or arriving at the property without actually staying. A review does not necessarily mean the guest completed a stay.

Watch for: Match the room type, travel dates and traveler type to your trip. A great property score can still hide complaints about the room or facilities you need.

Viator

Research a specific tour or activity before booking

Viator distinguishes reviews from customers who booked and experienced a product from Tripadvisor reviews, which do not require a purchase of that product. Check the source of the reviews shown.

Watch for: Do not assume a Tripadvisor review and a Viator review are two independent confirmations. Match the operator, itinerary and option, not just a similar tour title.

GetYourGuide

Compare feedback on an activity and its logistics

Its review guidance ties feedback to customer bookings. Reviews can also describe an attempted activity that failed, such as a guide not arriving; they are not limited to people who completed the tour.

Watch for: Separate complaints about the guide or itinerary from meeting-point, pickup and cancellation problems. All can matter, but they answer different questions about your trip.

Five checks before you book

  1. Match the exact listing. Check the address, operator, room or tour option, language and departure time. Similar names do not mean the same product.
  2. Read recent detail, not just the average. Look for repeated, specific reports about the things you need: quiet rooms, accessibility, pickup reliability or group size. A handful of reviews gives you less evidence than a larger, relevant sample.
  3. Read lower ratings and the replies. Decide whether a complaint is about a recurring problem or a preference unlike yours. A business response is useful context, not independent verification.
  4. Cross-check without double-counting. Compare the operator's own description with another review source. Repeated review text across sites is not additional evidence. Do not convert scores on different scales into a supposedly precise ranking.
  5. Read the actual booking terms. Confirm inclusions, extra fees, cancellation deadlines and who handles problems. Reviews cannot promise a refund or override the terms for your chosen option.

Ready to compare a tour?

Search the same destination and activity on both platforms. Compare the named operator, inclusions, total price and cancellation terms for your dates. Check the operator's direct website too; do not assume a marketplace is cheaper.

How we made this comparison

We compared the platforms' published review policies, linked above, by booking type, review eligibility and practical limitations. This is desk research, not firsthand testing of hotels or tours. We have not audited review authenticity or assigned scores to the platforms. Policies can change; check the linked source and the terms on your selected listing.
