Before you go

  • GOV.UK says to register with the local authorities within 3 days of arrival. Hotel staff register you, and a host in a private house should do it for you.

Travel tips

  1. Carry your passport at all times. GOV.UK says this is a legal requirement, and you can be fined or arrested if the police check and you do not have it.
  2. Check before taking photos near airports, border checkpoints, military barracks, bridges, police stations and metro stations, as GOV.UK advises.
  3. Use official airport taxis or an app such as Yandex or My Taxi. GOV.UK says unlicensed taxis are still common and many taxis lack rear seatbelts.
  4. Bring enough cash, or withdraw it in a main city before heading to the regions. GOV.UK says very few ATMs outside the main cities accept international cards.
  5. Call 1173 for the 24/7 tourist hotline. GOV.UK says its operators speak English as well as Uzbek and Russian.
