Travel tips
- Follow Mauritius Meteorological Services warnings from 1 November to 15 May, its official cyclone season. GOV.UK says you cannot leave your accommodation during a cyclone.
- Stay out of fresh water. TravelHealthPro says wading, swimming or bathing in it risks schistosomiasis, while sea water and adequately chlorinated pools do not.
- Keep your passport in the hotel safe and avoid walking alone on beaches or in poorly lit areas at night. GOV.UK says petty crime is common in tourist areas such as Port Louis, Grand Baie and Flic en Flac.
- If you drive, carry yellow chalk or a yellow marker. GOV.UK says drivers are expected to mark their vehicleβs position on the road after an accident.
- Book water sports only with an operator holding a Ministry of Tourism permit, and check there are enough life jackets. GOV.UK gives both checks.
