Travel tips

  1. Swim in daylight only, and never enter water that has been baited. GOV.UK says shark attacks can happen without warning, and night swimming, including at dusk, raises the risk.
  2. Hire jet skis and water sports equipment only from registered operators. GOV.UK says the industry is poorly regulated and people have been killed or seriously injured.
  3. Follow the Bahamas Department of Meteorology from June to November. GOV.UK gives 1 June to 30 November as the hurricane season, and the Department says August, September and October see the most cyclone effects.
  4. Stay in the main tourist areas and beaches if you are on foot, especially alone. GOV.UK reports violent crime in parts of New Providence and Grand Bahama.
  5. Take extra care when driving: traffic keeps left, but GOV.UK says most hire cars are left-hand-drive imports from the USA.
